Republic of Serbia (Serbian Cyrillic alphabet: Република Србија, Serbian Latin alphabet: Republika Srbija, English: Republic of Serbia), Serbia, abbreviated as "Serbia", is a landlocked country located in southeastern Europe, in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. The total land area of Serbia is 88500 square kilometers (10900 square kilometers in Kosovo). It borders Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Albania, with one-fifth of the Danube River, the second largest river in Europe, flowing through its territory. There are 30 states with 198 districts under their jurisdiction, with Belgrade as the capital. [1] Serbia has a population of 8.41 million (including 1.77 million in Kosovo).
Starting from the 9th century, some Slavic people who migrated to the Balkan Peninsula began to establish countries such as Serbia. After World War I, Serbia joined the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After World War II, Serbia became one of the six republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1991, the former Yugoslavia began to disintegrate. In 1992, Serbia and Montenegro formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On February 4, 2003, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was renamed Serbia and Montenegro. On June 3, 2006, Montenegro declared independence. On June 5th of the same year, the Republic of Serbia announced its succession to Serbia and Montenegro's status as subjects of international law.
